Volunteering and Travelling

Volunteering is an excellent way to see the world on a budget and really get to grips with a country, its culture and the locals. It’s an immensely rewarding experience and one that is likely to stay with you for life. In New Zealand there are a great many volunteer projects all over the country, inviting travelers to come and help out in a number of ways. From farming to conservation projects and many more besides, there are life changing experiences and lessons for pretty much any type of traveler.

Volunteer projects normally range in length from a one week, up to six months and longer. Depending on the type of project you join, the project length can be flexible, with many travelers choosing to stay longer than initially planned. There are a great many projects that are available year round and the majority will involve teams of volunteers, allowing you to meet and socialize with like minded people.

Paid Projects

There are hundreds of different paid volunteer projects that you can take part in. You will pay an initial fee which normally includes your accommodation, food and occasionally transport costs. You will generally have access to in country volunteer support who will be able to help you with any problems and help you make the most of your experience. Prices vary depending on the type of project, the duration and other factors. It’s on schemes like this that you’re most likely to meet and work with other volunteers, creating something of a team spirit, or a family away from home.

Volunteer for Free

Other schemes are in place that allow you to volunteer for free, or at least a minimal sign up cost – typically $20. These volunteer projects are generally more personal, small scale operations. The deal is you work a few hours a day in exchange for food and accommodation. Projects vary hugely and you can expect to find anything from baby sitting or farming, to hostel work or teaching. Websites such as Workaway or WWOOF New Zealand are great places to look.
